    • OBITUARY: "CARTHAGE REPUBLICAN"; Carthage, IL; 20 Jul 1887

"A Mother in Israel." - BOSCOW -- The venerable Mrs. Alice Boscow, mother of
townsman, W. A. Boscow, died at her son's residence in this city, Tuesday
      morning 19th inst., at 8 o'clock, aged 92 years and 24 days.
The lady's maiden name was Newall. She was born in the city of Liverpool,
Eng., June 24, 1795; married, September 24, 1813, to Nicholas Boscow in St.
Peters Church in the same city. The family emigrated to this country and
settled in Warsaw, Hancock, IL., in 1842. In 1845 her husband went to
Buffalo, N. Y. , to seek a business opening, and while there died on Nov 27 of
that year. The widow and family continued to reside in Warsaw thereafter.
Mrs. Boscow has for some years resided with her son, W. A., and came to this
city with his family in June or July 1855. She had twelve children, of whom
eight survive, seven being sons, Mr. W. C. Boscow being the youngest. (The
youngest son was Alexander Wellington Boscow. BR)
Mrs. Boscow's ancestors on both sides were members of the Episcopal church
through several generations. She was confirmed into membership in the same
church in childhood. In her life and character she adorned the high precepts of
her holy religion. She was a good and true woman, a loving, helpful wife, an
affectionate mother, and in her prime a kind and charitable neighbor.
She has been an invalid some years, and her family and friends were not
unprepared for the summons that would call her to rest at any moment. It was a
touching scene at her death bed. The Rev. S. H. Hyde and his wife were among
those present. The dying woman was conscious of her approaching end. Lifting
her dim eyes she exclaimed: "Lord, have mercy upon me!" Rev. Mr. Hyde prayed:
"Into God's kingdom may she have an exceeding abundant entrance." She exclaimed,
"O, what beautiful music!" and almost instantly expired. Truly, this was "the
      death of the righteous."
Funeral services will take place at the family residence this afternoon (20th)
at 2:30 o'clock; Rev. Wm. Bardens, of Warsaw, to officiate. Burial rite at
      Moss Ridge.
