Don Carlos' his of his youth in the [Salt Lake] Valley is a resume of the life of most of the young boys in the valley. He herded cows at Ensign Peak, and drove them down Main Street. Amusements were conducted in the front room of his father's home. Brigham Young had advised his father to build a large room, 30' by 40' for entertainment. It was used for parties and dances. By the time he was 19, he was freighting dynamite between Los Angeles and Salt Lake. He also hauled lumber from Kamas to Salt Lake. He was a veteran of the Black Hawk Indian War. He worked in the saw mills and was involved with building, homesteading and raising horses, cattle and sheep. He participated with his second family in settling Ioka on the Indian reservation during 1909. He participated in the dramas in Kamas and always took the part of the"villain." He was a good public speaker and participated in the church activities whenever called upon.
