  • 1851: On September 21, 1851 the LDS Church Presidency instructed "all the Saints in Pottawattamie" to head for Utah the next season "and fail not/' adding, "we wish you to evacuate Pottawattamie, and the States, and next fall be with us."'
1853 
  • 1853: Some Mormons remain in western Iowa, catering to the needs of other Americans traveling to Oregon and California.
