  • 1848: Winter Quarters is abandoned, and Miller's Hollow (Kanesville) becomes the main staging point for Mormon pioneers crossing the plains.
2 1849 
  • 1849: The area of Kanesville, Iowa, becomes the designated outfitting post for Mormon emigrants crossing the plains to the Salt Lake Valley.
3 1851 
  • 1851: On September 21, 1851 the LDS Church Presidency instructed "all the Saints in Pottawattamie" to head for Utah the next season "and fail not/' adding, "we wish you to evacuate Pottawattamie, and the States, and next fall be with us."'
4 1853 
  • 1853: Some Mormons remain in western Iowa, catering to the needs of other Americans traveling to Oregon and California.
